We’re promoting a new CD of a classic concert from 2000! Here are the details:
This band was formed almost by accident. When The Bill Allred Classic Jazz Band was unable to make their annual appearance at the Mammoth Lakes Jazz Jubilee in 2000, the directors Ken and Flossie Coulter asked Terry Myers to put together a jazz band to fill in the schedule at Mammoth.
Terry asked us if we’d be interested and we all agreed it would be a lot of fun. We had no arrangements, charts, or pre-programming. Heck, we didn’t even have a rehearsal! Each band member had some ideas for unique ways to present our songs, and so Terry & The Pirates was born for that weekend.
Dan Benkman, a friend who loves audio equipment, brought his portable DAT recorder and a stereo microphone to several of our sets that week. He recorded the band ‘live’ and sent me the recordings. I kept these in my archives for all these years.
Fast forward to 2018 – the folks at Suncoast Jazz Festival in Clearwater Beach, FL asked Eddie Metz if he knew of a band that was local to Central Florida that might be interested in playing for their festival. Eddie asked all of “The Pirates” and we said YES! We dug out the old recordings from Dan, took them to a mastering studio, picked the best cuts and made this CD.
The energy, spontaneity, and true entertainment of this band is here on this recording. This is truly a jazz band, as we literally made everything up on the spot. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we enjoyed performing.
